THE LODGE

Built in 1864 by the erstwhile British owner Lieutenant Colonel W.R. Wright, the Old Kent Lodge is perched at a vantage point within the estate. The verandah of the Lodge offers a breathtaking 180 degree view of the surrounding mountains and valley changing colours through the day and a panoramic view of the night sky after sundown.
Though the Lodge has vignettes of yesteryear, it has all the necessities of present day luxury tucked within it. The rooms have been designed as a reception, a dining room, a library and games area, a home theater, each fondly named after the members of the Wright family, who once inhabited The Lodge as their home. This perfect blend of history and luxury makes Old Kent one of Coorg’s best places to stay, particularly for those seeking a resort in Coorg for couples or the best honeymoon resorts in Coorg.

THE LEGACY

The property was developed in the 1800s by Lieutenant Colonel W. R. Wright, founding member of the Coorg Planters Association (CPA), who was also a writer and a poet. His keen oversight of every branch of the plantation contributed to the transformation of the estate in just twenty-three years – from a jungle in which big game abounded to a highly cultivated and thriving estate and a delightful home to his family. After Lt. Col. Wright, the property remained with his descendants until 1964 when it was bought by the present custodians and its present owners, the Buhari brothers who hailed from a coastal town called Kilakarai in southern Tamil Nadu. Venturing into the coffee business, the two brothers bought Old Kent Estates from the Wrights and Hallery Estate from the Mangles, another British Family well known in coffee cultivation in Coorg.

It was decided among them that Hallery Estate would be inherited by the younger brother, Syed Abdur Rahman and Old Kent Estates would be passed on to the family of the elder brother, Syed Abdul Cader also known as Thaikappa.

In the following five decades, it has been enjoyed by the second and third generations of the family as a cherished holiday home and a treasure chest of fond childhood memories, the pleasure of which they decided to share with the friends whom they are yet to meet – you!!

The Lodge has been restored to its former charm, and the English garden in front of it has been carefully recreated to what it once was. Restoration began in 2010 it was formally launched to the public as a heritage resort in 2013, and ever since has been enjoyed by discerning guests, history enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Preserved and nurtured across generations, Old Kent today is not only a working coffee plantation but also one of the finest luxury heritage resorts in Coorg, offering families, honeymooners, and travelers an authentic taste of vintage charm amidst nature’s embrace.
